Benefits of Mulch

  • Prevents soil compaction and erosion.
  • Suppresses weeds.
  • Captures and retains soil moisture.
  • Protects roots from the sun’s heat.
  • Protects plant crowns from winter cold.
  • Protects and stimulates microbial activity in the soil.
  • Adds nutrients to the soil as the mulch breaks down.

Suggested Guidelines for Mulching

  • Mulch all trees that are not in grass or thick ground cover.
  • Trees and shrubs benefit from mulch spread at least as far as their outermost branches (the drip line). To prevent diseases and pest infestation, avoid piling mulch against tree trunks.
  • Use a layer of coarse mulch of 3 or more inches in depth for weed control.
  • Spread mulch under annuals after they are well established (4- to 6-inches tall).
  • Water the ground thoroughly before and after applying a mulch cover.

Mulch Use Thickness Notes
Garden and Landscape Beds 3 to 6 inches Weed area before applying mulch.
Annuals and Perennials 1 to 3 inches Best to spread mulch when plants are 4 to 6 inches tall.
Shrubs and Trees 2 to 3 inches Avoid piling mulch against tree trunks.
Paths or Pathways 2 to 4 inches To keep paths weed-free even longer, place a layer of cardboard on the ground before spreading mulch.
Erosion Control 2 to 4 inches Use 2 to 4 inches of mulch over any area without cover; 3 to 4 inches on slopes.
